I made it to Liverpool street this evening. It was one of my least favourite pianos in terms of sound: no sustain pedal, over a tone flat, missing key notes (middle D and F#), really sticky and uneven feel...
However I think it has been my favourite piano in terms of people interaction! I guess so many people pass by, in a mood more likely to have a sing or a chat. I hung about for 2 hours and met:
- Trong, from Norway, who said the piano was "rubbish" but then proceeded to play some wonderful jazz improv, fingers flying effortlessly over the keys making wonderful sound;
- Liam, who claimed to be unable to sing or play but demonstrated an impressively broad musical taste, making requests from classical (Pachabel's Canon and some Chopin), to musicals (Les Mis to Les Cage Aux Folles) to pop/rock, to easy listening in languages other than English ('Time to say goodbye');
- Jim, who just wanted to be helpful and warn me that placing my camera on top of the piano was an open invite to a thief, and ended up hanging around for an hour and recruiting people to join me on my weekend task of getting to the rest of the 29 pianos;
- Susana, who needed some coaxing from her family before revealing that she could really play AND sing. So we did a couple numbers together: 'Imagine' and 'I'll be there'.
