Perhaps these well-attired businessmen, eyes watching their swirling market losses, would find offense within the ever improvised and under-practiced melodies I could barely struggle to muster. Still, as soon as the first few chords settled in harmony and the busy streets piled on regardless, I felt that soft descent of calm confidence in my accepted inability. And I could play. I could play those same few chords I had achingly taught myself months before. Play them here under the London sun, here as the business world tumbles onwards, here, between the riches and rushes of the financial world. It was a wonder. A little glimmer of a wonder I thank you for it. It made me smile. Having enjoyed playing both pianos, and having relinquished the Reuters Plaza piano to a young family, I got back on the DLR, to travel towards my task. There was a "poem on the underground" poster opposite me, "Piano", by D. H. Lawrence. It got me; these pianos take me back to childhood too, to memories of Grandma trying to teach us to play the piano. I found myself going the “wrong” way on the DLR this afternoon, travelling away from the task I had set myself to do, and towards the pianos at Canary Wharf.

She watched me play and thanked me for the performance which was sweet. I absolutely love the idea of having pianos in public.
